International speakers of English who focus on improving their English pronunciation and communication skills invariably find their lives improving economically, socially and personally—in regard to themselves and their families. Whether you are naturally talented at languages or have to strive for it, accent correction works. Whether you have difficulty expressing yourself or are a natural-born good speaker, communication skills can be learned and enhanced.
Private, customized, one-on-one coaching is the fastest and most efficient way to accomplish the results you are aiming for.
Susan Cooper, lead consultant of Cross-Culture Communications, works with international speakers from all language backgrounds and levels of English proficiency. She meets with clients usually once a week, more often if desired. Sessions are a full hour long and tailored for your real-life circumstances and goals. Additionally, Susan will be giving you suggestions and materials for practice between sessions, depending on your available time. Typically, it’s good to plan on a minimum of 12-16 sessions for significant improvement—the more you can practice between sessions, the faster progress will come.
Distance Coaching by Phone
TOP
Susan designs the distance sessions to simulate as much as possible the format, content and results of the in-person sessions at her San Francisco office—clients calling by phone; sharing documents via email and fax. Susan has been doing distance coaching in accent correction / accent reduction and English language communication skills for over a decade. Enthusiastic and satisfied clients work successfully in this manner from the convenience of their homes and offices in different cities throughout the US and Canada, as well as Asia and Europe, at a compatible hour.
In-Person Coaching
TOP
Clients living in the greater San Francisco Bay Area have the choice of meeting with Susan in her San Francisco office or working by phone (email and fax) whenever that might be more convenient.
Description of the Sessions
TOP
In assisting clients, Susan’s main focus is understanding your goals and how you like to work. She always designs the instruction around your specific requirements and preferences. When she finds out more precisely what you want to accomplish, Susan will devise a program tailored precisely for you—both for your sessions and for between-session practice—to achieve your individual objectives.
Three approaches to the training:
◇ Practicing drills—after Susan has shown you how to fix your personal accent issues, simple repetition automatically replaces old habits with new
◇ Reviewing professional materials &/or articles of interest to you—prompting you to expand into new vocabulary and grammatical structures you need to know
◇ Editing or composing work-related or academic documents you’ve written or need to write, allowing us to catch and correct errors in grammar and/or word usage
What you bring to the sessions:
◇ Questions about what you’ve been noticing in your English and the English surrounding you
◇ Various materials—the more real-life the better—professional documents, cultural interests, personal matters; absolute privacy assured
◇ Your intention, backed up by appropriate effort, to improve your English communication skills
What Susan does:
◇ Identify your deviations from standard American English (typically five or six particular sound patterns, not hundreds of unique mistakes as you may think)
◇ Explain and demonstrate the physical adjustments that correct your errors
◇ Train your hearing so you can abandon dependence on misleading English spelling
◇ Help you develop familiarity with the rhythm and style of natural spoken English
◇ Assist you with vocabulary building—including cultural references, idiomatic expressions, and slang
◇ Guide you in writing—including reports, presentations, resumés, etc.
◇ Secure your immediate improvements and set you up with a program for self-training, so you can continue to progress on your own
“After working with Susan Cooper in San Francisco for about two years, I feel much more confident in speaking and writing English. In-person sessions helped me to improve my pronunciation and my speech became more accurate and smoother. For the last six months, having moved to another city, I switched to distance sessions by phone—which are just like the in-person sessions—and this has also been great and very useful for me. Plus, phone sessions have allowed me to be more confident during job-related conference calls. All of this has helped me to improve my English grammar, vocabulary and communications skills.”
